Each of these views of human nature are merely possibilities. Which one serves us better?
Fundamentally Flawed: Our Current Culture’s View of Human Nature
We are taught in the current culture that humans are fundamentally flawed by nature and that is why we see so much hurt and disharmony in our relationships with each other and with the earth. The degree of violence, pollution, ill-will, and political unrest we experience are simply the result of the inherently self-centered and mean aspects of our nature and nothing can be done about that. Some people inevitably turn out to be mean or bad, and nothing can be done to stop their behavior except punish them. By the same token, our culture says that some people turn out to be generous and good, and these people are upheld as examples for everyone to admire as if they could do no harm. In our culture, we believe these two extremes inevitably emerge regardless of how we raise our children or what our cultural beliefs and values are. We believe people simply are that way, rather than that they become that way from childhood training.
